Kampung Pulai

Marhaban Ya Ramadhan

L
ocated about 16.5 km south of Melaka town and 7.5 km from Merlimau town.

HISTORY

About 150 years ago, Daeng Taib, who had a 'Bugis' bloodline, started this village. He and his family lived in an area called 'Pantai Gubung' (East Pulai). At that moment most people living in the small village at the Melaka Straits are the Bugis and Javanese descent. After Daeng Taib passed away, his son, Tok Dewa succeeded him and increased the size of the village. There were also other Bugis settlements in places such as Serkam and Teluk Mas.

Daeng Taib's village got its name from the 'Pulai' tree, which grew abundantly in that area. The adoption of the name of this hardy tree as the name of the village was to symbolize the strength and unity of the villagers. Since independence many changes have taken place in this village.

Kampung Pulai was chosen as one of the hosts for 'homestay tourism' because of its reputation as a dynamic village, comprising of residents who are self reliant, loyal to King and Country and live according to the tenets of Islam. The village has managed to maintain its rustic charm even in the face of ever advancing urban influences. Visitors and tourists will get the best of what village life in Melaka is all about. The sight of the villagers, going about their daily chores with a minimum of fuss, their easy manner, the lack of tensions and stress, their simple life style and their total subjugation to the will of God will impress any visitor. Is it any wonder that many an urban dweller, on his retirement, goes back to his village to spend his retired life in peace and tranquility?
